What is Benzene?
Benzene is a naturally occurring aromatic hydrocarbon produced by volcanic activity and forest fires, and found in plants and animals. Industrially, it is mainly derived from coal tar and petroleum. Benzene is a colorless liquid with a gasoline-like odor, known for its toxicity and carcinogenicity. It is widely used in producing polymers like polystyrene, as well as chemicals, plastics, detergents, and pesticides.
Benzene appears in many synthetic products such as plastics, lubricants, dyes, synthetic rubber, detergents, pharmaceuticals, cigarette smoke, and pesticides. Historically sourced from coal tar, petroleum-based production methods have dominated since the 1950s. Over half of global benzene output is used for manufacturing ethylbenzene, styrene, and polystyrene, with phenol, aniline, and dodecylbenzene as other common derivatives.
What is Benzine?
Benzine, also called petroleum ether, is a volatile, colorless, and highly flammable solvent. Despite the name, it contains no ether bonds. It is a fraction obtained from petroleum distillation, located between naphtha and kerosene in the refining process. The term "benzine" is used regionally to refer to gasoline or petrol, with names varying by country, including "Benzin" in Germany and "Petrol" in the UK.
