BASF will calculate the carbon footprint of all products on sale

 BASF announced on July 28 that it will provide customers with the total carbon dioxide emissions of its products, which is the "carbon footprint" of all products.

  Product carbon footprint includes all product-related greenhouse gas emissions, from the purchased raw materials to the energy consumption in the production process, until the finished product leaves the factory gate to be sent to the customer.

   Since 2007, BASF has been calculating the carbon footprint of each product. Through internally developed digital solutions, BASF will be able to calculate the product carbon footprint of approximately 45,000 products sold worldwide. In the next few months, BASF will start this calculation with selected products and customer groups, and plans to provide carbon footprint data for its entire product portfolio by the end of 2021.

With the support of these product carbon footprint data, customers can accurately find out ways to avoid greenhouse gas emissions. At present, BASF is also helping customers reduce the carbon footprint of specific products by providing alternative raw materials and renewable energy. "

  For example, BASF's biomass balance plan uses organic waste and vegetable oil in an integrated production system to extract renewable raw materials to replace fossil fuels and accurately distribute them to the corresponding sales products. Another application case of the biomass balance program is BASF's "ChemCycling™" project.

   Starting in 2020, BASF has been providing customers with the first batch of commercial products. These products use plastic waste processed by "chemical recycling" as raw materials in the initial stage of the value chain. BASF's sales products produced through these two methods have the same performance as products produced from purified stone materials, but have a smaller carbon footprint.

   BASF stated that while ensuring production, BASF has set itself a goal of maintaining the total production-related emissions by 2030. BASF is seeking a three-pronged approach, including improving production and process efficiency, purchasing electricity from renewable energy sources, and developing new low-emission processes.

   BASF has been using sustainability assessment methods for 25 years, including collecting and processing data used to measure sustainability contributions. BASF's product carbon footprint calculation is based on a large amount of emissions data collected from its own production network and reliable average data on the purchase of raw materials and energy. This method follows the general standards of life cycle analysis, such as ISO 14044 and ISO 14067 and the greenhouse gas protocol product standards.
