EU renewable energy power generation surpasses fossil fuel for the first time

ECHEMI 2020-08-03

According to a research report released by the British climate and energy think tank, Ember, the EU's renewable energy power generation exceeded fossil fuels for the first time in the first half of this year.

Regarding this result, Ember commented that this is a historical moment in the transformation of the European power sector. Nine years ago, the EU's fossil fuel power generation was twice that of renewable energy. Since then, renewable energy has developed at an unprecedented speed and has undergone reversal changes.

The report pointed out that in the first half of the year, the 27 member states of the European Union generated 40% of the electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, hydroelectric and bio-energy. On the other hand, fossil fuels account for 34%. This benefited from the increase in new installed capacity of wind farms and photovoltaic power plants, the main force of renewable energy power generation. In the first half of the year, the EU's renewable energy power generation increased by 11% year-on-year, of which wind and photovoltaic power generation accounted for 21% of the EU's total power generation, a record high. The top ranking is Denmark with 64%, Ireland with 49%, and Germany with 42%.

On the other hand, due to the increase in renewable energy power generation and the impact of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, the current electricity demand fell by 7% year-on-year, resulting in a drop of 18% in fossil fuel power generation. The EU's carbon dioxide emissions also fell by about 23% during the same period.
