Germany's annual natural gas imports fell by more than 10%

ECHEMI 2023-01-17

Recently, statistics released by the German Federal Network Administration showed that Germany's natural gas import in 2022 was 1449 TWh, down 12.3% from 2021. After the outbreak of the Russian-Uzbekistan conflict, the supply of natural gas imports from Russia decreased. On the contrary, Norway has leapt to the top of Germany's natural gas import destinations.

Russia accounted for 22% of Germany's natural gas imports in 2022, far lower than 52% in 2021. At the same time, Norway's share rose to 33%. In addition, the import supply from the Netherlands and Belgium is also making up for the partial shortage of the import supply from Russia. Due to the decrease in imports and the decrease in demand from other countries, Germany's natural gas exports have also decreased, from 749 TWh in 2021 to 501 TWh.

On the other hand, Germany's domestic natural gas consumption fell by 14%. Compared with the past four years, the average temperature in Germany is 1.1 ℃ higher, which helps Germany save energy expenditure and consumption. As of January 11, Germany's natural gas storage volume was 91.1%, far higher than the 40% that the German Federal Network Administration believed in February last year.

In 2022, Russia gradually stopped supplying natural gas through the "Beixi-1" natural gas pipeline connecting Russia and Germany through the Baltic Sea. In September of the same year, the Beixi natural gas pipeline was shut down after an explosion.
