IOC Launches BS-VI Grade Fuels in Delhi NCT

Chemical Weekly 2018-04-12

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has announced the introduction of Bharat Stage (BS) VI fuels in Delhi NCT. A function to mark the launch was organised in New Delhi on April 2, 2018.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister, Petroleum & Natural Gas and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan said that the introduction decision to advance the BS VI roll out to April 1, 2018, instead of April 2020, demonstrated the commitment of the government to deliver energy justice to the common man. “The decision to leapfrog to BS-VI fuels instead of BS-V has been taken to meet global standards on carbon emission. India is now into an elite list of nations to have implemented Euro-VI emission norms, a step that will lead to significant reduction in vehicular pollution,” he said. He also assured that the government is committed to meet the deadline of pan-India BS-VI roll out by April 1, 2020. BS-VI fuel will bring down sulphur content to 10-ppm from the existing level of 50-ppm, and will improve emissions from even the older vehicles on road, while allowing more advanced emissions control systems to be fitted in BS-VI vehicles when they begin to roll out.

Currently BS-IV fuels are being supplied across India since April 2017, with 50-ppm of sulphur. In 2016, the government decided to leapfrog from BS-IV to BS-VI by 2020 by skipping the BS-V stage all together.
