Sumitomo Chemical will build a polypropylene production base in Wuxi

ECHEMI 2020-09-18

On September 15th, Sumitomo Chemical announced that it would set up Zhuhai Sumika Composite Plastics Co., Ltd. Wuxi branch in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province as its fifth polypropylene production base in China. The production base will be built in Sumika Electronic Materials Technology (Wuxi) Co., Ltd., and will be put into operation in 2021 together with the Chengdu factory that has already been built.

PP composite material is a high-performance material that improves impact resistance and rigidity by mixing polypropylene with elastomers, glass fibers and inorganic fillers. It is used in automobile bumpers, interior materials, and household appliances. China is the world's largest automotive market. In recent years, due to increasingly stringent environmental regulations and increased demand for product safety, the demand for PP composite materials for automotive interior and exterior trim has increased year by year.

In this context, Sumitomo Chemical established a new production and sales base in Chengdu, Sichuan Province in October 2016. The plant is currently undergoing trial production and customer evaluation. Following the Chengdu plant, Sumitomo Chemical established a Wuxi plant in the rapidly growing Central China region.
