The first outdoor mosquito repellent containing Transfluthrin will be approved for registration in the United States
The EPA is close to approving the first outdoor use of Transfluthrin, a product submitted by CENTRAL GARDEN & PET for registration to repel mosquitoes in outdoor residential areas and semi-enclosed areas such as decks.
Registration of Transfluthrin in the United States
The EPA reviewed the outdoor use of Transfluthrin during its initial registration in 2017, but did not approve it due to insufficient efficacy data at the time.
CENTRAL GARDEN & PET subsequently submitted a new efficacy report, which EPA has now assessed is sufficient to support the application for outdoor use of Transfluthrin and does not pose any risk to humans when the product is used according to label instructions. Potential exposure to non-target species is low due to the rapid dissipation and degradation properties of Transfluthrin in the environment.
Registration status of Transfluthrin in the United States
Transfluthrin is a pyrethroid insecticide used to repel flying insects, including mosquitoes and flies.
Bayer Environmental Science first applied for the registration of technical, and obtained the certificate of technical in 2018 (Bayothrin Technical, EPA registration No. 432-1588).

640-2
Currently, the only end-use product containing Transfluthrin is PIRK (EPA registration No. 91879-1, technical agent procured from Bayothrin Technical), and the product is restricted to indoor and enclosed use.
