Chiyoda develops technology to produce paraxylene from carbon dioxide

Chiyoda Corporation, Toyama University and HighChem announced the first successful production and purification of paraxylene from CO2. Chiyoda, Toyama University, HighChem, Nippon Steel Engineering Corporation, and Mitsubishi Corporation have been collaborating on the production of paraxylene from CO2, including reduction of CO2 emissions and Use CO2 for chemical materials.

Reducing carbon dioxide emissions from factories, power plants, etc., using technologies including carbon recovery technologies, is critical to combating climate change.

NEDO therefore supports an advanced technology development project to produce industrial paraxylene from CO2 as an alternative to existing fossil fuel-derived chemicals.

Like conventional p-xylene, p-xylene produced from CO2 can be applied to many types of resins and related chemicals through purified terephthalic acid (PTA). However, resins and chemicals produced from CO2 benefit the environment by enabling the carbon cycle and reducing CO2 emissions.

Commercialization using mass balance method 5 (as a potential procedure) could integrate CO2-produced paraxylene into the traditional paraxylene supply chain, offering CO2 emission reduction benefits to the market.
