Make Animal Ingredients Disclosure Mandatory for Cosmetics Packaging
The government is set to amend the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, to make it mandatory for cosmetic and toiletries makers to put a full disclosure on packaging regarding the inclusion of any ingredients of animal origin.
On lines of packaged food products, cosmetics and toiletries like face wash, soaps, shampoos and toothpastes will soon carry a brown/red or green dot indicating the source of the product as vegetarian or non-vegetarian.
A proposal in this regard was recently cleared by the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB). A notification in this regard is expected to be issued in another six months.
The Department of Consumer affairs is also said to support the proposal and has asked the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to make it mandatory.
