Govt. Looks to Plug Sulphuric Acid Leak at Sterlite's Copper Plant
Around 1,300 tonnes of sulphuric acid have been removed from Sterlite Industries’ closed copper plant at Thoothukudi, according to district collector Mr. Sandeep Nanduri, days after a leak was detected at the smelter.
Sterlite had earlier said that the leak was severe and inaction could lead to serious environmental consequences. It had filed a petition in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking access of authorised persons to its premises to plug the leak and evacuate hazardous chemicals with police protection. The smelter, which has been shut for about three months, produces about a million tonnes of sulphuric acid annually. The company plans to appeal the government’s move to shut the plant.
