Clariant's new cellulosic ethanol plant will be completed within this year
After the plant is put into operation, it will process about 250,000 tons of straw annually and produce 50,000 tons of sunliquid® cellulosic ethanol.
sunliquid® cellulosic ethanol
Sustainable development and innovation
sunliquid® cellulosic ethanol is an advanced, truly sustainable, carbon-balanced biofuel that can be directly blended into traditional fuels for use in automobiles and fuel addition facilities.
Vast land and sufficient supply of raw materials
The sunliquid® factory received more than 40 million euros funding from the European Union. The construction site is located on a 10-hectare plot of land in Podari near Craiova in southwest Romania, where Clariant can ensure adequate local supply of raw materials. And to make full use of the existing local logistics and industrial infrastructure.
Sunliquid® factory recruitment continues
Clariant is recruiting and training factory operators and other local staff in the Romania sunliquid® project, and has made substantial progress.
The number of local employees of the company is growing rapidly, and currently has reached 26. In the long run, the factory will directly hire as many as 100 employees, and will create about 300 jobs, involving the collection, storage and transportation of raw materials. These team members benefit from comprehensive training programs in Germany and Romania.
They first received training at the sunliquid® pilot plant in Straubing, Germany, and then went to a well-known education center in southwest Romania to receive training in cooperation with the University of Craiova.

During the epidemic, our project team and local partners ensured the continuous progress of this important construction project while ensuring the safety and health of everyone, which is impressive.
After completion, the sunliquid® cellulosic ethanol production plant will become the cornerstone of our continued transformation into a leading specialty chemical company, while embodying our commitment to innovation and sustainable development.
Vice President of Clariant and Global Head of Biofuels and Derivatives Business Line

In the past few months, the construction site has achieved several major milestones and completed the installation of most large-scale key equipment. The plant is expected to be completed and put into production before the end of 2021.
We are proud to see that Clariant's investment and construction projects have effectively benefited the Podari area. When the factory personnel are ready and put into production at full capacity, we look forward to seeing the influence of this technology further increase.
