Jazz Pharmaceuticals Explores Strategic Options, Including Potential Sale
According to sources familiar with the matter, Jazz Pharmaceuticals Plc is exploring strategic options, including a potential sale of the company. The Dublin-based pharmaceutical company is reportedly in talks with advisors to gauge interest and is considering various possibilities, such as a breakup or divestment of certain parts of its business.
One potential option under consideration is separating its cannabinoid business from its oncology operations. Jazz Pharma recently acquired GW Pharmaceuticals Plc, the maker of the first cannabis-derived drug to receive approval in the US, for $7.2 billion in cash and stock.
Following the news, Jazz Pharma's shares rose up to 4% in New York trading. The company's stock had experienced a 17% decline this year prior to Thursday's close, giving it a market value of approximately $8.6 billion.
Large drugmakers looking to expand in neuroscience and oncology may show interest in Jazz Pharma, according to insiders. However, discussions are ongoing, and there is no certainty that they will result in a transaction.
Jazz Pharma has developed treatments for sleep disorders and epilepsy and has been focusing on cancer medicines targeting difficult-to-treat hematologic malignancies and solid tumors. The company has also been researching cannabinoid-based therapies for serious diseases.
In 2022, Jazz Pharma stated its expectation to achieve $5 billion in revenue by 2025 and obtain approval for at least five additional novel products by the end of the decade.
