Roche to Acquire Telavant Holdings in $7.1 Billion Deal
Swiss healthcare company Roche has announced its plans to acquire Telavant Holdings in a $7.1 billion transaction. Telavant is a pharmaceutical company that specializes in developing drugs for inflammatory and fibrotic diseases, with a particular focus on finding new therapies for Crohn's disease.
In a press release, Roche highlighted Telavant's ongoing development of a "promising new therapy" for patients with Crohn's disease. As part of the acquisition agreement, Roche will make a near-term milestone payment of $150 million.
Upon obtaining full rights to Telavant's RVT-3101 drug, which is currently in development for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, Roche intends to initiate global Phase 3 trials. These trials will involve clinical testing on hundreds to thousands of patients with the targeted conditions.
Roche's Pharmaceuticals CEO, Teresa Graham, expressed confidence in the potential of RVT-3101, stating, "Based on the very promising data, we strongly believe in the first-in-class and best-in-disease potential of this late-stage antibody to treat people living with IBD." Graham further emphasized Roche's commitment to advancing the antibody's development and making it available to patients in the United States and Japan as soon as possible.
Telavant is currently owned by Pfizer and Roivant Sciences. In addition to the Telavant acquisition, Roche also announced that it will have an option to collaborate with Pfizer on a new drug for inflammatory bowel disease.
This strategic acquisition by Roche reflects the company's dedication to expanding its portfolio of treatments for inflammatory and fibrotic diseases, with a specific focus on advancing therapies for patients with Crohn's disease.
