Nestlé Faces Legal Action Over Alleged Misleading Labelling of Pet Food as 'Natural'
Nestlé Purina Petcare, the world's second-largest pet food manufacturer, is under legal scrutiny in the US as multiple lawsuits are filed, alleging deceptive advertising of pet food labeled as "natural" despite containing synthetic ingredients. The class action lawsuit claims that Nestlé Purina misled consumers, presenting its products as healthier and more natural than they genuinely are.

Approximately 70 products labeled as "natural" by Nestlé Purina allegedly contain FDA-recognized synthetic ingredients, including zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, menadione sodium bisulfite complex, and xanthan gum. These ingredients are found across various pet food varieties, such as Purina ONE, Fancy Feast Gourmet Naturals, and Beyond Mixers+.
The lawsuit contends that Nestlé Purina engaged in unfair and misleading practices, deceiving consumers and potentially causing harm to the public. It also accuses the company of misrepresenting the production and quality of its products through information provided on product labels.
The lead plaintiffs argue that the term "natural" lacks a legal definition for pet food, providing Nestlé Purina with an opportunity to market its products as healthier without adhering to a clear standard. The lawsuit asserts that no product labeled "natural" should contain these synthetic ingredients, and consumers, if aware, would have refrained from purchasing or paid substantially less.

As pet owners increasingly prioritize the health and well-being of their pets, Nestlé Purina's labeling practices are under heightened scrutiny. The company may be liable to provide financial relief to the claimants.
The pet food market is expected to grow by almost 5% over the next five years, driven by rising pet ownership and consumer willingness to spend more on products supporting pet health. A global trend indicates a demand for pet food made with natural ingredients, with 45% of pet owners willing to pay a premium for such products. In Asia, the pet food industry is reflecting broader food trends, with an increasing focus on natural, additive-free, and preservative-free products. Pet food brands in the region are fortifying products with essential nutrients to align with consumer preferences for healthier and cleaner options.
