Efsa panel clears fatty alkanamides for FCMs
A European Food Safety Authority (Efsa) scientific panel has cleared the mixture of methyl-branched and linear C14–C18 alkanamides derived from fatty acids for use in food contact materials (FCMs) in a published opinion.
The substance is used in plastics, such as polyethylenes, as a 'slip' or 'release' agent.
The Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF) panel concluded that the substance was not a safety concern for consumers within certain limits of use. It can be safely used in the manufacture of polyolefin articles intended for contact with all foodstuffs other than fatty foods. The migration should not exceed 5mg per kg of food.
The speciality chemicals company Croda submitted the evaluation request via the UK competent authority. Its term use for the substance was originally isooctadecanamide, but this was changed by the panel.
