UN Food and Agriculture Organization Releases Safety Evaluation on Titanium Dioxide and Flavoring Agents in Food

In a significant development, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization Food Additives Joint Expert Committee (JECFA) unveiled their 97th meeting's summary report on November 24, 2023. The focus of this meeting centered on the safety assessment of titanium dioxide and various flavoring agents when utilized as food additives.

For titanium dioxide, the committee reiterated the "unspecified" Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) established during the Thirteenth Meeting. This decision takes into account the compound's remarkably low oral absorption and the absence of any identified hazards associated with its presence in the diet. Notably, specifications related to alumina and silica content were removed, as these components are not employed as food additives. The soluble lead content in 0.5 NHCl was reduced from 10 mg/kg to 5 mg/kg, and the soluble cadmium content in 0.5 NHCl decreased from 1 mg/kg to 0.5 mg/kg.

Regarding flavoring substances, the committee found no safety issues and introduced specifications for 21 flavoring substances. This thorough evaluation affirms the safety of these additives, marking a crucial step in ensuring the well-being of consumers and further establishing regulatory guidelines for their usage in food products.
