ASPEN, South Africa's Largest Pharmaceutical Company, Spends US$100 Million to Acquire Sandoz's Business in China

ECHEMI 2023-12-06

On December 4, South African pharmaceutical company ASPEN spent US$100.3 million to acquire Sandoz’s Chinese business, aiming to expand its global influence.

ASPEN acquired a series of Sandoz products and related rights in this transaction, including the synthetic hormone injection Sandostatin, the osteoporosis drug Aclasta and the fungal infection treatment drug Voriconazole, and other Sandoz product lines in China.

Under the terms of the transaction, the payment of US$20.0596 million will be subject to the potential commercial performance of Sandoz's pipeline products.

ASPEN CEO Stephen Saad said: "Sandoz's product portfolio, pipeline, comprehensive infrastructure and experienced team will expand ASPEN's influence in China, the world's second largest pharmaceutical market, and further consolidate its business development foundation in the Chinese market."

ASPEN expects the acquisition to increase annual sales by approximately $95.89 million.

Previously, through another transaction with ASPEN, Sandoz spent US$60 million to obtain the relevant rights to ASPEN's four anesthetic products. As of June 2023, the above-mentioned drugs have brought ASPEN revenue of US$14.89 million.
