Notpla's Seaweed-Based Packaging Achieves Milestone Recognition for Eco-Friendly Innovation
London-based startup Notpla has made history as its seaweed-based packaging becomes the first material officially recognized as plastic-free under the European Single Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) by the Dutch government. This breakthrough not only reduces dependence on traditional plastics but also aligns with sustainability goals in the face of impending bans and taxes on disposable plastic food packaging across Europe.
Following a rigorous nine-month verification process overseen by the Dutch government's environmental authority, ILT, Notpla emerged as fully compliant with the SUPD introduced in 2021. The Netherlands' stringent adherence to the directive, including the recent imposition of a tax on plastic-containing disposable cups and containers, underscores the significance of Notpla's achievement.
Paul Foulkes-Arellano, founder of Circuthon Consulting, emphasized the uniqueness of Notpla's accomplishment, stating, "It's particularly significant as it's not something you can buy and pay a subscription for. Most of these certifications come from profit-making companies who are interested in selling as many subscriptions as possible."
Notpla's Sustainable Approach
Notpla's packaging, crafted from seaweed, utilizes a readily available resource that grows rapidly without the need for freshwater, land, or fertilizers. In contrast to conventional containers and bioplastics incorporating fossil-based coatings, Notpla's packaging requires no chemical modifications or petrol-based coatings. Comprising kraft cardboard and a 100% natural seaweed coating, it can be seamlessly recycled with existing paper streams or composted at home, leaving no environmental trace, mirroring the natural decomposition of fruit waste.
The Environmental Impact
Notpla's potential impact on the environment is significant, especially in the Netherlands, where 19 million plastic cups and food packaging pieces are discarded daily. According to former state secretary for environment, Vivianne Heijnen, Notpla's packaging has the potential to prevent at least 15 million single-use plastic packaging units from being produced in the Netherlands alone.
This holds particular weight given the surge in single-use plastic food containers during the Covid-19 pandemic, with global food delivery services experiencing a remarkable 75% increase in gross merchandise volume in 2020. As online meal delivery service users surpassed 1.9 billion in 2023, projections hint at reaching 2.4 billion by 2027, signaling sustained growth in this sector.
The Future of Sustainable Packaging
Notpla's SUPD compliance shields it from future bans and taxes on disposable plastic food packaging across Europe. In the Netherlands, businesses adopting Notpla's packaging may find relief from the recently introduced plastic tax. With England's Single-Use Plastic Ban already in effect, Notpla's success marks a pivotal moment in the trajectory of sustainable packaging.
Foulkes-Arellano emphasized the broader impact on the sustainability narrative, stating, "National recognition is a 'gold standard.' If governments take a more active role in scientifically determining what is correct and what is mere greenwash, then we will make good progress towards a less polluted world."
Responding to this achievement, Notpla has entered into a strategic partnership with Dutch manufacturer Conpax to distribute plastic-free food packaging in the BENELUX regions. Notably, Thuisbezorgd, a Dutch food delivery service, has partnered with Notpla, promoting exclusive kraft boxes with seaweed lining for environmentally conscious consumers. As consumer preferences shift towards eco-friendly choices, Notpla's success reflects a growing demand for sustainable packaging options.
