BASF Sues Apple Over Face Authentication Patents Used in Dozens of iPhones and iPads

ECHEMI 2026-09-04

On September 3, 2026, BASF filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple in federal court in Midland, Texas, alleging that face authentication technology used in dozens of iPhone and iPad models infringes patents owned by the German chemical group. Details including the full patent claims and damages sought have not yet been fully disclosed.

The case has drawn attention largely because of the different industries represented by the two companies.

BASF is primarily known for chemicals, materials, industrial solutions, nutrition and agricultural businesses, while Apple is one of the world's largest consumer electronics companies.

The dispute, however, centers on intellectual property related to face authentication technology.

According to the information currently available, BASF alleges that dozens of Apple devices use technology covered by its patents.

The lawsuit has been filed in U.S. federal court, but the public record reported so far does not provide full details on the specific patent claims, the technical functions involved or the amount of compensation BASF is seeking.

For that reason, the case should not yet be described as a challenge to Apple's entire Face ID system.

The legal question is narrower: whether certain face authentication functions used in Apple devices fall within the scope of BASF's patents.

For BASF, the case also reflects the breadth of intellectual property held by large chemical companies.

Years of investment in materials science, electronics and applied research can generate patents that extend well beyond conventional chemical manufacturing.

The next developments will depend on the patents asserted by BASF, Apple's response and the court's assessment of infringement and patent validity.
