Farmless Secures Funding to Expand Carbon-Negative Protein Production with Innovative Pilot Plant

Farmless, a pioneering startup focused on sustainable protein production, has announced plans to build a pilot plant following a successful injection of funds. The Netherlands-based fermentation startup, known for its carbon-negative protein, aims to utilize the €4.8 million seed round, co-led by World Fund and Vorwerk Ventures with participation from Revent, to establish the pilot plant in Amsterdam. The primary goal is to scale up its fermentation process and maintain the efficiency that allows for significantly reduced land usage compared to traditional protein sources.

Pepin Vloemans, Head of Communications at Farmless, explained that the pilot plant will serve as a platform to expand their innovative fermentation process. "Here we'll scale up our fermentation process," Vloemans stated, adding that the facility will include a substantial kitchen for experimentation with new food products, all under one roof. The funding will also be allocated to carefully hiring additional personnel and navigating the regulatory approval process.

Farmless utilizes a unique feedstock, combining hydrogen, nitrogen, CO2, and renewable energy to produce carbon-negative protein. Vloemans emphasized the efficiency of their approach, stating, "The crux is that we're skipping the very inefficient chain of photosynthesis and animal agriculture." The fermentation process, relying on alcohol made with renewable energy, requires up to 5000 times less land than traditional beef farming.

The production process involves two types of energy – one for powering the brewery and the other for the feedstock. Farmless plans to rely on certified green energy contracts for brewery operations and purchase renewable energy-produced alcohol from selected partners. Vloemans is optimistic about the protein's potential, citing promising results in water and oil holding capacity. The goal is to replace multiple ingredients in meat, dairy, and egg alternatives, enhancing taste, texture, and simplifying ingredient lists.

Efficiency remains a central focus for Farmless, aiming to revolutionize protein production without the extensive land requirements associated with traditional meat sources. Adnan Oner, Founder and CEO of Farmless, expressed excitement about the overwhelming investor interest in this funding round. Oner envisions a future where microbial kingdoms unlock the potential for abundant, cruelty-free food supplies, rewilding the world, restoring forests, and actively reducing CO2 levels in the atmosphere.
