For adults, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of magnesium is between 310 420 mg per day for women and 400 420 mg per day for men. When it comes to magnesium supplements the tolerable upper intake level (UL) is set at 350 mg per day for adults. As for phosphate intake in adults of gender, the RDA stands at 700 mg per day. When it comes to phosphate supplements the UL is set at 4000 mg per day.


Deficiencies in Magnesium and Phosphate

Magnesium deficiency can occur due to consumption lack of absorption or excessive loss through conditions such as diarrhea, vomiting, malabsorption syndromes, kidney diseases, or alcoholism as well, as certain medications. Some signs of a lack of magnesium, in the body, include muscle weakness, cramps, spasms, shaking, tetany, seizures, irregular heart rhythms, high blood pressure, low calcium levels, low potassium levels, feelings of depression and anxiety trouble sleeping, and migraines.

 

Phosphate deficiency can occur due to excessive loss or excretion of phosphate. Several factors can lead to phosphate deficiency such as nutrition or starvation; alcoholism; lack of vitamin D; overactive parathyroid glands; renal tubular acidosis; diabetic ketoacidosis; respiratory alkalosis; specific medications; or excessive use of antacids or calcium supplements. Symptoms of deficiency may include bone pain; softening and weakening of bones (osteocalcin); rickets (in children); muscle weakness; fatigue; loss of appetite; weight loss; anemia; impaired growth in children; and increased risk of infections and bleeding disorders. In some cases, it may cause confusion, coma, or even death.

 

Other Minerals That Interact with Magnesium and Phosphate

1.Calcium is another mineral for maintaining bones and muscles. Magnesium and calcium work together to form hydroxyapatite which is a mineral component in bones and teeth. Magnesium also helps regulate calcium levels preventing its accumulation, in tissues where it could be harmful. Magnesium and calcium have an inverse relationship meaning that when one increases the decreases.

2.Vitamin D is not a mineral. Rather a soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in helping the body absorb calcium and phosphorus. It also helps regulate the levels of these minerals, in our blood and bones. Magnesium is responsible for activating vitamin D within our bodies and improving its absorption.

3.Zinc on the other hand is a trace mineral that participates in enzymatic reactions supports immune function aids in wound healing and facilitates growth. It also contributes to maintaining the structure and integrity of cell membranes which contain phospholipids. Magnesium and zinc work synergistically by enhancing each other's effects.

4.Potassium acts as vital for nerve transmission muscle contraction, balance, and blood pressure regulation. It also plays a role in maintaining the acid-base balance of our body along with phosphate. Magnesium and potassium have a relationship as they support each other's functions.
