The surfactant is referred to as non-ionic if the head group has no charge. An anionic or cationic head group has either a negative or positive charge. The surfactant is referred to as zwitterionic if it has both positive and negative groups.

Particularly in cleaning goods like shampoos and laundry detergents, anionic surfactants are used. On the other hand, nonionic surfactants are frequently utilized in the food sector and as wetting agents. Due to their higher production costs, cationic and zwitterionic surfactants are more often used in specialized applications.
Working of Surfactants:
Surfactant molecules in a solution join together to create micelles when there is an adequate number of them present. The surfactant tails are gathered together in the middle of the structure, protected from water, while the surfactant heads position themselves so they are exposed to water as the micelle forms. The micelles function collectively to remove soil. While the hydrophilic heads remove the encircled soils off the surface and into the cleaning solution, the hydrophobic tails draw soils to themselves and surround them. The soil in the middle of the formation is then suspended by the micelles' tails as they reform.
