With an Investment of 630 Million Yuan, Wanhua Chemical’s 50,000 Tons/Year Water-Based Resin Project Was Put into Production

ECHEMI 2023-12-15

After a one-year construction cycle, Wanhua Chemical's 50,000 tons/year water-based resin project in Ningbo Daxie Island Intelligent Logistics Park (Weier Park), China, was completed and successfully put into operation. It is understood that Wanhua Chemical’s 50,000 tons/year water-based resin project has a total investment of 630 million yuan.

Product introduction

1. Water-based polyurethane
Water-based polyurethane is a new polyurethane system that uses water instead of organic solvents as the dispersion medium. It is also called water-dispersed polyurethane.

Water-based polyurethane uses water as the solvent and has the advantages of no pollution, safety and reliability, excellent mechanical properties, good compatibility, and easy modification. It has a good development prospect in the adhesive and coating industries. PU ionomer has good adhesion to both natural and synthetic rubber surfaces and can be used in the manufacture of footwear. Water-based PU dispersions have been widely used in the fields covered by general solvent-based PU, and have been successfully used in industries such as light textiles, leather processing, coatings, wood processing, building materials, papermaking, and adhesives.

The project's water-based polyurethane products include two series, namely water-based polyurethane dispersion (PUD) and modified water-based polyurethane dispersion (PUA). Both series of products are produced using the acetone method.

2. Water-based epoxy resin

Epoxy resin is an important part of water-based epoxy coating. Epoxy resin contains a large number of polar groups such as hydroxyl and ether bonds, and has excellent adhesion ability to metal substrates. The benzene ring, C-C chain segment and other groups give it good heat resistance, corrosion resistance and toughness. Crosslinking with amine curing agent can form a dense paint film with high crosslinking density, which has excellent chemical resistance and salt spray resistance, and plays an irreplaceable role in the field of industrial corrosion protection. Because of its excellent mechanical properties and anti-corrosion properties, epoxy resin is widely used in the primer and intermediate paint of anti-corrosion coatings.

Compared with other coatings, water-based epoxy resin coatings use water as a dispersing medium, do not contain organic solvents or volatile organic compounds content is low, no environmental pollution, no fire hazards, to meet the current environmental protection requirements; Water-based epoxy coatings can also be mixed with other water-based polymer systems to complement each other in performance.

Water-based epoxy resin can greatly reduce the VOC emissions of traditional solvent-based epoxy, and at the same time has anti-corrosion properties that are close to or even better than solvent-based epoxy.

This project produced an epoxy resin dispersion emulsion with good storage stability, excellent corrosion resistance and water resistance. The emulsion obtained by this method has small particle size, good stability, excellent anti-corrosion properties, simple operation, and is conducive to industrialized continuous production, and the production process includes polymerization, dispersion, etc.

3. Carbomer

Carbomer is a high molecular polymer of acrylic acid bonded with allyl sucrose or pentaerythritol allyl ether. It is a very important rheology regulator. Neutralized carbohydrate is an excellent gel matrix and has important uses such as thickening and suspension. It has simple process and good stability and is widely used in emulsion, cream and gel.

Carbomer resin is widely used in medicine and cosmetics. Only a small amount of carbomer resin can achieve the required viscosity, the conventional dosage is 0.10%, 0.2%, 0.50%, and has a thickening and stabilizing effect, so as to prepare a wide range of viscosity and different rheological emulsion, cream and gel products. While other thickeners such as cellulose, Hansen gum and xanthan gum are used with high concentrations (about 2%), in some rinse-free gels and other systems that are difficult to thicken and require transparency, carbomer resin has an irreplaceable role.

Carbo resin is used for liquid thickening and is increasingly used in wash and care cosmetics, with the following advantages:

Does not irritate human skin and eyes, after a large number of toxicological studies found that it is safer than salt, has been used for more than 50 years;

The suspension stability of acrylic /C10 ~ 30 alkyl acrylate crosslinked polymer can improve the suspension of silicone oil, compared with cellulose and guar gum, suspension stability is higher;

Improve foam stability in low foam system;

The crosslinked copolymer of acrylate /C10 ~ 30 alkyl acrylate can still maintain a high viscosity in the presence of salt in the system, and is less affected by the pH value of the solution or the concentration of electrolyte, so the application range is more extensive.

Easy to use, short wetting time, saving a lot of manpower, material resources and time;

Good anti-corrosion performance, not easy to be decomposed by microorganisms, easy to preserve;

With excellent rheological properties, it can adjust the viscosity of the product, improve the thixotropic performance of the gel system, and improve the stability of the product.
