Wanhua Chemical Announces Polyol Capacity Expansion

ECHEMI 2023-12-18

Recently, the draft environmental impact report for the polyol unit expansion and transformation project of Wanhua Chemical (Yantai) Petrochemical Co., Ltd. was released for public comment.

Project Overview

(1) Project name: Wanhua Chemical (Yantai) Petrochemical Co., Ltd. Polyol Unit Capacity Expansion and Renovation Project;

(2) Nature of construction: expansion;

(3) Construction unit: Wanhua Chemical (Yantai) Petrochemical Co., Ltd.;

(4) Construction location and area: The west area of Wanhua Yantai Industrial Park, Yantai Economic and Technological Development Zone, Yantai Chemical Industrial Park, is located within the boundary of the existing butanol device, and no new area will be added;

(5) Project overview: Capacity expansion and transformation of the polyol device in the park. The project’s public works and auxiliary facilities rely on the existing park facilities.

Background of the project

The 250,000 tons/year butanol unit is one of the main process units in the propylene oxide and acrylate integration project of Wanhua Chemical Group Co., Ltd. The project obtained environmental impact assessment approval in 2012, the acceptance approval was obtained in batches in 2016 and 2017, and independent acceptance was completed in 2018.

With the continuous deepening of China's energy conservation, emission reduction, green and environmentally friendly economic policies and the rapid development of new material applications, the application range of neopentyl glycol (NPG) products and trimethylolpropane (TMP) products in the field of new materials will continue to expansion, development prospects are very broad.

Wanhua Yantai Industrial Park has an 80,000 tons/year neopentyl glycol unit in operation and a 60,000 tons/year neopentyl glycol project under construction. The demand for the raw material isobutyraldehyde will greatly increase. At the same time, a 50,000 tons/year trimethylolpropane project is under construction, which requires a butanol unit to provide refined n-butyraldehyde as raw material, which will partially affect the production of butanol. For this reason, in order to ensure the demand for isobutyraldehyde and n-butyraldehyde in the park's downstream units while ensuring the production of butanol, the butanol unit needs to be expanded and transformed.
