Valsartan Tops Global Consumption of Sartans, Arisartan Shows Highest Growth Rate
From 2016 to 2022, the total global consumption of sartan raw materials amounted to 34,282.2 tons, with valsartan (also known as Valsartan) being the most consumed variety at 9,925.53 tons during that period. Arisartan, despite having the highest growth rate at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 227.76%, had a total consumption of less than 100 tons over the seven-year period. Sacubitril valsartan (also known as Sacubitril/Valsartan) also exhibited a high growth rate, with a CAGR of 100.84% and a total consumption of 355.44 tons from 2016 to 2022.
In recent years, the overall domestic market for sartan raw materials in China has been promising, with arisartan and other varieties showing significant upward trends. From 2016 to 2022, the consumption of sartan raw materials in China increased from 253.85 tons to 589.70 tons, with a total consumption of 2,693.71 tons. In 2022, the top three consumed varieties were irbesartan (also known as Eprosartan), valsartan, and arisartan, with total consumption of 298.96 tons, 172.73 tons, and 37.19 tons, respectively.
The CAGR of total sartan raw material consumption in China from 2016 to 2022 was 15.08%. The top three varieties with the highest CAGR during that period were arisartan, olmesartan, and valsartan, with CAGRs of 221.70%, 35.03%, and 16.35%, respectively.
The future looks promising for sacubitril valsartan. The top 10 sartan raw material varieties by global consumption in 2022 included losartan, valsartan, irbesartan, telmisartan, and olmesartan. Losartan ranked first with a consumption of 2,037.55 tons. Sacubitril valsartan, in its formulation form, achieved significantly higher global sales than other similar varieties in 2022, with a five-year CAGR exceeding 50%. It secured the top spot in the global sartan formulation market with sales of $6.941 billion, surpassing other sartan medications by a wide margin. As the market expands, there is an expected increase in the consumption of sacubitril valsartan raw materials and formulation products, driven by the approval of generic drugs domestically and the influence of centralized procurement policies.
Over the past five years, the total sales of sartan formulations have shown an increasing trend, rising from $14.588 billion in 2018 to $23.115 billion in 2022, with a five-year CAGR of 12.19%.
In conclusion, valsartan has been the most consumed sartan globally, while arisartan demonstrated the highest growth rate. The market for sartan raw materials in China has shown positive growth, with arisartan and other varieties gaining momentum. Sacubitril valsartan holds promising prospects, with its formulation leading global sales in the sartan market. The overall sales of sartan formulations have also experienced a steady increase in recent years.
