Geno and Sojitz Collaborate to Accelerate the Commercialization of Nylon 6

ECHEMI 2025-10-10

Genomatica (Geno), a leader in industrial biomanufacturing technology, has entered into a new partnership with Sojitz Corporation (Sojitz) to significantly accelerate the commercialization of plant-based nylon 6 based on Geno's underlying proprietary technology.

Sojitz has made a strategic financial investment to accelerate time to market and is also contributing its commercial and operational expertise.

Nylon 6 is one of the most widely used materials in the world. Traditionally made from fossil-derived carbon sources or recycled materials, it is used in a wide range of everyday products, including outdoor gear, clothing, military materials, and automotive parts. Geno's proprietary technology enables 100% renewable carbon-based nylon 6.

Mitsutoshi Takagi, General Manager of Sojitz's Environmental and Life Sciences Division, said, "At Sojitz, we believe true progress comes from challenging the status quo. Geno has been a leader in industrial biomanufacturing, constantly pursuing innovation. We look forward to collaborating with Geno to actively reshape the future of this sector with materials that are both commercially viable and globally responsible."

"Sojitz's Chemical Division is actively advancing the development and trading of bio-based chemicals. We will leverage our expertise and global network to further accelerate the launch of the world's first plant-based nylon 6 business."

Geno CEO John Gugel said, "Through our collaboration with Sojitz, we are advancing our mission to achieve cost-competitive plant-based nylon 6 production on an industrial scale. This material will serve as a drop-in replacement for nylon 6 traditionally produced from petroleum-based feedstocks."

"Our collaboration with Sojitz and other existing partners aims to accelerate the commercialization of Geno's groundbreaking technology, providing consumers and the major brands they serve with high-performance materials produced from traceable and renewable carbon sources."
