Boost Your Winter Immune System: What Foods Should You Be Eating?
As the winter chill settles over Canada, it's crucial to support your immune system against seasonal illnesses. While you can't exactly "boost" your immune system through food, you can provide it with the necessary nutrients to function optimally. Here's what you need to know, according to Canadian dietitian Abbey Sharp.
To support a healthy immune system, focus on foods that promote a healthy gut, as 70% of the immune system is located there. Include the following in your diet:
1. Fatty fish: Rich in heart-healthy omega-3s, fatty fish enhances the activity of white blood cells, which are crucial for immune function.
2. Colourful fruits and vegetables: High in antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin K, and beta-carotene, these fruits and vegetables support immune health. Opt for a variety of colours to ensure a wide range of nutrients.
3. Zinc: Found in nuts, zinc is an antioxidant known to be beneficial for immune function.
4. Fermented foods: Promote a robust gut microbiome, which is essential for overall immune health. Include foods like sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt, and pickled products.
5. High-fibre foods: Act as prebiotics, feeding the good bacteria in your gut. Whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes are excellent sources of dietary fibre.
In addition to a nutrient-rich diet, consider supplementing with vitamin D3, especially during the winter when sunlight exposure is limited. Vitamin D3 plays a critical role in immune function and protecting against disease.
Supporting your immune system goes beyond food. Regular exercise is crucial for stimulating the immune system. Physical activity, even a simple walk, is recommended after receiving a vaccine.
To incorporate seasonal produce into your winter diet, focus on colourful options. Citrus fruits like grapefruit, mandarins, clementines, and kumquats are great choices. Pomegranates are also rich in antioxidants. Leafy greens such as kale provide vitamin K, while sweet potatoes, squash, and carrots offer beta carotene. Don't forget to include proteins like turkey, which play an essential role in immune function.
To simplify incorporating immune-supportive foods, aim for at least three different colored foods daily. For example, have apples for breakfast, a dark leafy green for lunch, and a sweet potato or orange vegetable for dinner. Additionally, including probiotic-rich foods like yogurt or fermented products can be beneficial. If needed, consider adding a probiotic supplement to your routine.
When it comes to diets to avoid in the winter, be cautious of those low in colorful fruits and vegetables, such as strict carnivore or keto diets. These may lack essential antioxidants, hindering immune function. Similarly, low-calorie diets combined with excessive exercise can elevate cortisol levels, which suppress the immune system. Instead, opt for a well-rounded, nutrient-dense diet to ensure your body receives a wide range of nutrients and antioxidants.
Support your immune system this winter by making mindful food choices, engaging in regular exercise, and adopting a healthy lifestyle. Remember, a strong immune system is your best defense against seasonal illnesses.
