Can Unreported Allergens and Gluten in Protein Substitutes Pose Food Safety Risks in Canada?
On December 29, 2023, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a public notice regarding food safety testing.
The CFIA has been monitoring the levels of chemical and microbial hazards and has developed risk management strategies. In cases of non-compliance, the CFIA will take appropriate actions, including notifying manufacturers or importers, conducting targeted sampling, or implementing product detention and recalls.
The recent food safety monitoring notice focuses on undisclosed allergens and gluten in protein substitutes/vegetarian meat products, specifically covering a portion of the period from 2020 to 2021.
