Significant Progress in Research on the Impact of Chlorpropham on Flavor Quality of Thin-Skinned Melons: Insights from China Agricultural Quality Standards Institute

In a recent breakthrough, the research team at the China Agricultural Quality Standards Institute, specializing in agricultural product quality and safety testing technology, has made significant advancements in understanding the influence of the plant growth regulator chlorpropham on the flavor quality of thin-skinned melons. This research sheds light on the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of chlorpropham in melon fruits and evaluates its impact on flavor quality at different concentrations.

 

The cultivation of thin-skinned melons is widespread in China, and to enhance their yield, the plant growth regulator chlorpropham is commonly used in greenhouse environments. The research conducted by the team focused on the aromatic thin-skinned melon variety (459) extensively grown in northern regions. It pioneered the use of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) to investigate the spatial distribution of chlorpropham and its metabolites in melons. The study revealed that within two days of application, chlorpropham and its metabolites were predominantly found in the outer and middle pericarp layers of the fruits, with rapid dissipation of residues. Sensory analysis indicated that high concentrations of chlorpropham led to a decrease in overall aroma and an increase in bitterness in thin-skinned melons, exhibiting significant differences compared to other treatment groups and the control group. Taste reactivity analysis revealed that the significant bitterness observed in the high-concentration treatment group was a result of the combined action of cucurbitacin B and cucurbitacin B 2-O-Beta-D-glucoside. This study provides scientific data and novel insights into the effects of the use and residues of plant growth regulators on the flavor quality of agricultural products.
