Dow Chemical Earns ISCC PLUS Certification for PO/PG and Polyol Production in Freeport, Texas

ECHEMI 2024-01-23

On January 22, 2024, Dow Chemical announced that its PO/PG and polyol manufacturing site in Freeport, Texas, has received International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS certification. ISCC PLUS certification recognizes Dow's approach to decoupling fossil feedstocks through the use of waste-derived feedstocks following a comprehensive independent external audit.

ISCC is the world's leading international certification standard for fully traceable and environmentally, socially and economically sustainable supply chains. As Dow continues to manufacture products using recycled and biocyclic feedstocks, this validation makes it possible to track alternative feedstocks through a mass balance approach.

Thales de Oliviera, head of sustainability for Dow Polyurethanes' Americas business, said: "Mass balancing is the best technology to demonstrate the large-scale use of alternative raw materials in the chemical industry. ISCC PLUS certification is an important milestone in the North American polyurethane end market's move to become more circular, reflecting our commitment to more sustainable production and products.”

The new ISCC PLUS certified polyurethane facility will produce products for the automotive, construction, consumer goods, food, fragrance, pharmaceutical and industrial markets.

As part of its ongoing sustainability efforts, Dow Chemical is constantly looking for new and innovative ways to incorporate sustainable ingredients, particularly raw materials from biobased sources or post-industrial consumer waste, into its products through a mass balance approach, through independent external validation.

With each successful outcome, Dow makes progress toward its goal of gaining approval for all of its polyurethane, chloralkali ethylene, propylene oxide and propylene glycol manufacturing sites worldwide.
