Pharmaceutical Industry Performance in 2023: Transformation of Loss-Making Companies and Top 10 Profitable Enterprises

ECHEMI 2024-02-02

The pharmaceutical industry witnessed a significant turnaround in 2023, with numerous companies reversing their losses and experiencing substantial profit growth. This article delves into the financial performance of the pharmaceutical sector, highlighting the top 10 companies that achieved remarkable net profit outcomes.

The pharmaceutical industry's main business operations gradually returned to normal in 2023, signaling a reduction in non-recurring revenues. As the financial results for the previous year are unveiled, the industry finds itself in a state of conflicting emotions. According to data from Tonghuashun, as of January 31, 2024, more than 235 pharmaceutical companies have released their performance forecasts for the previous year. Among them, 124 companies projected a year-on-year increase in net profit, while 111 companies anticipated a decline. Overall, the industry showed a mild upward trend. Notably, within the companies that experienced growth, 33 managed to transform their losses into profits, and 41 witnessed substantial increases in net profit, indicating a positive overall trajectory for the industry.

Among the top 10 companies in terms of net profit (median) for 2023, pharmaceutical enterprises dominated the list. Noteworthy mentions include Huahai Sanjiu, Huadong Medicine, and Kelun Pharmaceutical. These pharmaceutical companies have established themselves as leaders in terms of financial performance. The net profit figures for these companies stood at 2.942 billion, 1.618 billion, 1.222 billion, and 1.130 billion, respectively. Their success showcases the strength of the Chinese traditional medicine sector in recent years. It is interesting to highlight that Tianjin Tasly Pharmaceutical, which incurred a loss of 267 million in 2022, was the only company among the top 10 to suffer a loss that year. However, in 2023, not only did they manage to reverse the loss, but they also achieved a profit of 1.222 billion, making them the most prominent player in the top 10 list.

Behind the scenes of these profitable enterprises lies a tale of challenges and triumphs, often unknown to the public. Tianjin Tasly Pharmaceutical, a renowned traditional Chinese medicine company, faced a downturn in revenue from 2020 to 2022, with figures of 13.576 billion, 7.592 billion, and 8.593 billion, respectively, following its record-high revenue of 18.998 billion in 2019. The decline can be attributed to the company's decision to dispose of its equity in Tasly Marketing in August 2020, resulting in a 43.99% drop in revenue in the pharmaceutical commercial sector. The pharmaceutical commercial segment was a vital pillar supporting the company's performance, accounting for 67.17% of the total revenue in 2019. Despite the challenges faced in the commercial sector, Tianjin Tasly Pharmaceutical continued to focus on innovative drug development by leveraging the synergy between traditional Chinese medicine, chemical drugs, and biopharmaceuticals. The company's 2023 interim report revealed a product pipeline with 95 products, including 26 traditional Chinese medicines, 57 chemical drugs, and 12 biopharmaceuticals.

The dominance of the Huahai group, with two companies included in the top 10 list, further highlights their strategic presence in the traditional Chinese medicine sector. The Huahai group's history can be traced back to 1938 when it was established as Lianhehang, engaging in the procurement of medical supplies such as pharmaceuticals and bandages. Over the years, the Huahai group expanded its pharmaceutical business and entered the pharmaceutical manufacturing domain through the establishment of Huahai Dong'eajiao in 2004. The group continued its foray into the traditional Chinese medicine market by acquiring Sanjiu Medical & Pharmaceutical, Jiangzhong Pharmaceutical, and a 28% stake in Kunming Pharmaceutical Group, one of China's oldest and most prestigious pharmaceutical companies. The collaboration between Huahai Sanjiu and Kunming Pharmaceutical Group has further strengthened the group's position in the traditional Chinese medicine sector.

The pharmaceutical industry's performance in 2023 witnessed a remarkable transformation, with several companies turning their losses into profits and achieving substantial growth in net profit. The traditional Chinese medicine sector emerged as a key player, with companies like Huahai Sanjiu and Tianjin Tasly Pharmaceutical leading the way. As the industry continues to evolve and innovate, these top-performing enterprises are set to carve a path of success in the coming years.
