Breakthroughs in Global Sales of Top 20 Anticancer Drugs Revealed
The fight against cancer remains a global priority, with pharmaceutical companies striving to develop innovative therapies to combat this devastating disease. According to a recent report by Yaozhinews, more than 20 anticancer drugs, categorized by their generic names, achieved annual sales exceeding $2 billion in 2023. These drugs encompass a range of immunotherapies, targeted therapies, and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). This article highlights the top 20 global sales figures for anticancer drugs, showcasing the diverse landscape of cancer therapeutics.
Key Findings:
Among the top-selling anticancer drugs, eleven are small molecules, seven are monoclonal antibodies, and two are ADCs. Small molecules target various pathways such as BTK, EGFR, CDK4/6, AR, PARP, and BCL2. Monoclonal antibodies and ADCs, on the other hand, exhibit a more focused approach, with four targeting PD-1/PD-L1, three targeting HER2, and one each targeting CTLA4 and CD38.
Leading Companies and Their Contributions:
AstraZeneca emerges as the frontrunner with the highest number of products in the top 20 list, including self-developed drugs like TAGRISSO and IMFINZI, the acquired drug CALQUENCE from Acerta Pharma, LYNPARZA in collaboration with Merck, and ENHERTU in partnership with Daiichi Sankyo. Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) follows closely behind with four drugs on the list, featuring immune checkpoint inhibitors OPDIVO and YERVOY, as well as immunomodulators REVLIMID and POMALYST/IMNOVID. Roche secures three positions with PERJETA, TECENTRIQ, and KADCYLA. However, the sales figures for their previously dominant biologics, Herceptin, Avastin, and Rituxan, have declined to around $1.5 billion each, thus missing the top 20 ranking.
The Reign of PD-1 Inhibitors:
PD-1 inhibitors have dominated the market, reflecting the robust momentum of immunotherapy in cancer treatment. These inhibitors activate the body's immune system to target and kill cancer cells, bringing new hope to patients and revolutionizing cancer therapy. In 2014, Opdivo (nivolumab) from BMS and Keytruda (pembrolizumab) from Merck gained regulatory approval in Japan and the United States, ushering in a new era of immune-based cancer treatment. In 2023, Keytruda claimed the top spot with annual sales of $25 billion, making it the "king of drugs." Keytruda's sales grew by 19% compared to the previous year, and it is expected to remain a top-selling drug in the field of oncology for the foreseeable future. Opdivo, another PD-1 inhibitor, also surpassed the $10 billion mark in 2023, with estimated sales of around $10.03 billion based on BMS and Ono's financial reports.
Other Notable Therapies:
PD-L1 inhibitors also demonstrated strong performance. Roche's TECENTRIQ achieved sales of 3.766 billion Swiss francs in 2023, while AstraZeneca's IMFINZI recorded sales of $4.237 billion, the lowest among the four PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors but with the highest growth rate of 52%. This growth can be attributed to IMFINZI's widespread use in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer and its combination with the CTLA-4 inhibitor tremelimumab, fueling a new wave of growth. Additionally, cellular immunotherapies such as CAR-T and TIL therapies have gained importance in cancer treatment in recent years. However, their sales figures still lag behind those of antibody-based drugs. Yescarta from Gilead achieved the highest sales among ADCs, reaching $1.498 billion in 2023, representing a 29% growth rate.
The global sales figures for the top 20 anticancer drugs in 2023 showcase the remarkable progress made in the field of oncology. PD-1 inhibitors, particularly Keytruda, have emerged as the leaders, revolutionizing cancer treatment and offering renewed hope to patients. The landscape of cancer therapeutics continues to evolve, with diverse approaches such as targeted therapies and ADCs making significant contributions. As research and development efforts persist, these groundbreaking therapies hold the potential to transform the lives of cancer patients worldwide.
