Mexico Faces Avian Influenza Outbreak: Approximately 160,000 Poultry Infected

Mexico is grappling with a significant outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza, with approximately 160,000 poultry birds being affected. The country's Ministry of Agriculture reported the emergence of the H7N3 strain of avian influenza to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) on February 22, 2024. The outbreak has primarily affected the states of Jalisco, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, and Michoacán since its confirmation on March 7, 2023. Laboratory tests have identified around 161,750 birds as suspected cases, out of which 8,173 have shown signs of illness, and 7,939 have unfortunately died. To control the outbreak, approximately 153,811 birds have been culled and disposed of.
