WuXi AppTec Achieves Record-breaking Revenue of 40.34 Billion Yuan in 2023
WuXi AppTec, a leading pharmaceutical company, has announced its impressive financial results for the year 2023. With remarkable growth in revenue and net profit, the company has achieved a significant milestone in its history. This article delves into the key highlights of WuXi AppTec's financial performance, showcasing its robust growth and strategic achievements.
WuXi AppTec, a prominent player in the pharmaceutical industry, recently released its annual financial report for 2023. The report reveals that the company achieved a staggering revenue of 40.34 billion yuan, marking an impressive 2.5% year-on-year growth. Notably, excluding the commercialization of COVID-19 projects, the revenue surged by an impressive 25.6%.
The net profit attributable to the parent company reached 9.61 billion yuan, demonstrating a notable growth rate of 9.0% compared to the previous year. The diluted earnings per share also witnessed a substantial increase of 14.9%, amounting to 3.24 yuan. Furthermore, after adjusting for non-IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards), the net profit attributable to the parent company soared to an unprecedented 10.86 billion yuan, reflecting a remarkable growth rate of 15.5%. The adjusted diluted earnings per share surged by 15.7% to 3.68 yuan.
WuXi AppTec's operational cash flow experienced a significant year-on-year growth of 23.6%, with a continuous surge in free cash flow, reaching 7.12 billion yuan. The company plans to distribute cash dividends amounting to 30% of the net profit attributable to the parent company, totaling 2.88 billion yuan.
The revenue distribution across various business segments in 2023 showcased WuXi AppTec's diversified portfolio. The chemical business segment recorded revenue of 29.17 billion yuan, representing a growth rate of 1.1%. Excluding the commercialization of COVID-19 projects, the revenue surged by an impressive 36.1%. The new molecule business (TIDES) demonstrated remarkable growth, with an annual revenue of 3.41 billion yuan, marking a strong year-on-year growth rate of 64.4%.
WuXi AppTec's testing business segment achieved revenue of 6.54 billion yuan, reflecting a growth rate of 14.4%. The drug safety evaluation business witnessed a revenue increase of 27.3%. The clinical research site execution (SMO) services maintained its industry-leading position in China, with a growth rate of 26.1%, facilitating the approval of 54 innovative drugs for clients. Furthermore, the clinical CRO services supported clients in obtaining 21 clinical trial approvals and submitting five applications for market authorization.
The biological business segment generated revenue of 2.55 billion yuan, showcasing a growth rate of 3.1%. The revenue from related new molecule categories witnessed an impressive surge of 26%, with the nucleic acid new molecule platform serving over 200 clients and delivering more than 900 projects. WuXi AppTec's early discovery comprehensive screening platform integrated multiple technologies and multidimensional database analysis capabilities, enabling the provision of extensive and in-depth services to clients. The company also established a high-throughput automated protein production line, launching the novel DELvision service (protein-DEL information database), empowering clients to efficiently analyze protein-small molecule interactions.
The high-end treatment CTDMO (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization) business segment generated revenue of 1.31 billion yuan, maintaining a steady growth rate of 0.1%. WuXi AppTec played a vital role in supporting 49 preclinical and Phase I clinical trials, nine Phase II clinical trials, five Phase III clinical trials (two projects in the BLA preparation stage), and one commercialization project. The company actively facilitated the market authorization applications (BLA) for plasmids and lentiviral vectors (LVV) projects in CAR-T cell therapy, as well as the world's first innovative tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy project. Additionally, WuXi AppTec secured a new contract for LVV production for a commercialized CAR-T product and prepared for the BLA submission for a significant commercialized CAR-T product.
Despite a decrease in revenue in the domestic new drug research and development services segment, amounting to 730 million yuan, various achievements were noteworthy. Three customer-developed new drugs obtained market approval, generating revenue from sales, while two drugs are currently in the application stage for market approval. WuXi AppTec has successfully completed the IND (Investigational New Drug) filing for 190 projects, obtained clinical trial approvals (CTA) for 169 projects, and has three projects approved for market entry. Additionally, the company is actively engaged in 32 Phase III clinical projects, 73 Phase II clinical projects, and multiple Phase I clinical projects.
