EU Assessment Confirms Safety and Efficacy of Vitamin B12 Produced by Ensifer adhaerens CGMCC 21299 as an Animal Feed Additive
In a recent development, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) conducted an evaluation of the safety and effectiveness of vitamin B12 produced by Ensifer adhaerens CGMCC 21299 as an additive in animal feed. This evaluation was carried out in response to a request from the European Commission, aiming to ensure the quality and safety of animal feed additives within the European Union (EU).
The EFSA's Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed examined the production of vitamin B12, also known as cyanocobalamin, through fermentation with the non-genetically modified strain of Ensifer adhaerens CGMCC 21299. The scientific opinion, based on the evaluation, confirms that this additive is safe for all animal species, consumers, and the environment.
During the assessment, it was determined that no viable cells or DNA of the production strain were detected in the additive, alleviating any concerns regarding the safety of the production strain. Consequently, cyanocobalamin produced by fermentation with E. adhaerens CGMCC 21299 is considered safe for use in animal feed. However, it should be noted that the additive contains nickel, making it a skin and respiratory sensitiser. As such, precautions should be taken to avoid inhalation and dermal exposure.
Furthermore, the evaluation concluded that when administered through feed, cyanocobalamin produced by E. adhaerens CGMCC 21299 effectively meets the nutritional requirements of animals. This finding reinforces the potential benefits of using this vitamin B12 additive in animal feed formulations.
The EFSA's assessment provides valuable scientific insights and supports the safe use of vitamin B12 produced by Ensifer adhaerens CGMCC 21299 as an animal feed additive. The confirmation of its safety and efficacy contributes to the overall quality control and regulatory framework for animal feed additives in the EU.
In conclusion, the recent evaluation by the EFSA affirms that vitamin B12 produced by Ensifer adhaerens CGMCC 21299 is a safe and effective additive for animal feed. This assessment reinforces the commitment of the EU to ensure the safety and quality of animal feed additives, promoting the well-being of animals and consumers alike.
