Siegwerk adds functional coatings division for sustainable packaging solutions
Siegwerk announces the establishment of a new business unit. It works on functional coatings to enable sustainable packaging innovation in the sense of a circular economy. Siegwerk is a supplier of printing inks and coatings for packaging applications and labels.
With the expansion of its organizational structure effective April 1, 2024, the company underscores its growing strategic focus on functional coatings. This will also enhance its position as a driver of circular packaging solutions across all business units.
“In addition to our broad portfolio of well-known printing inks and varnishes, we have a long-term commitment to developing functional coating technologies suitable for a wide range of substrates, processes and performance requirements,” says CEO Dr. Nicolas Wiedmann at Siegwerk.
Especially considering the sustainability trend, functional printed coatings offer huge potential for the future of packaging. Because by providing specific functional properties, they play a key role in realizing packaging solutions in the sense of a circular economy. These functional properties are critical to the performance and durability of packaging.
Gilles Le Moigne, Head of CE Coatings Business Unit, said:"Functional coatings can help reduce packaging complexity or provide functional properties to renewable materials such as paper, allowing them to be used in a wider range of packaging applications." "That's why we're increasingly focusing on developing innovative coating technologies that prioritize recyclability, allowing packaging to seamlessly re-enter the circular economy."
Here, the newly established Coatings Division will become a cross-divisional center of excellence for circular solutions. The addition of specialized functional coating technologies to Siegwerk's traditional coatings offers different packaging applications.
In addition to effective primer solutions for delamination and deinking as well as decorative coatings with extraordinary optical or tactile effects, Siegwerk customers can now choose from a wide range of functional coatings. These include barrier coatings that block liquids, oil and grease, water vapor, oxygen and UV rays, from heat seal coatings to protective coatings. as well as coatings with property of heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, anti-slip, anti-static, etc.
