Biologically-based Pesticides Drive Nearly 50% Growth in Brazil's Sugarcane Nematode Control Market

Brazil's sugarcane nematode control market has experienced significant growth over the past five years, with a remarkable increase of nearly 50%. This growth has been primarily driven by the adoption and effectiveness of biologically-based pesticides. 

In recent years, Brazil has witnessed a substantial surge in demand for nematode control solutions in the sugarcane sector. According to a survey conducted by Kynetec, a leading market research firm, the overall revenue from pesticide sales in Brazil reached 9.2 billion Brazilian Real (BRL) in 2023. Among various crops, sugarcane ranks as the third most important crop in the agrochemical industry. Compared to the previous year's revenue of 8.6 billion BRL, sugarcane pesticide sales have experienced a notable 7% growth. Notably, nematode control holds strategic significance for pesticide manufacturers operating in this sector.

Kynetec's FarmTrak survey reveals that the sales of sugarcane nematode control products in Brazil amounted to 403 million BRL last year, representing a remarkable 47% increase compared to 2019 (273 million BRL). The state of São Paulo contributed to 59% of the total sales (235.8 million BRL), followed by the central-west region with 29% (118.4 million BRL). Of the total nematode control sales projected for 2023, 64% (257 million BRL) are attributed to biologically-based pesticides. This shift towards biologically-based solutions reflects a significant change in the preferences of sugarcane growers, with an increasing number of farmers opting for these environmentally friendly alternatives.

The study further reveals that Brazil maintains approximately 9 million hectares of sugarcane cultivation annually, with over 50% (4.926 million hectares) located in the state of São Paulo, followed by 23% (2.037 million hectares) in the central-west region. Lucas Naves Montrasio, an expert from Kynetec, highlights that 15% of the sugarcane planted in Brazil in 2023 (1.329 million hectares) utilized nematode control products. The adoption rates in the central-west and São Paulo regions were the highest, accounting for 21% and 16% of the cultivated area, respectively. The soil characteristics of the central-west region exacerbate nematode infestations, making nematode control crucial in that area.
