EU Evaluates Authorization Renewal Application of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei ATCC PTA-6135 as Animal Feed Additive

In a recent development, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has conducted an evaluation of the application for the renewal of authorization of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei ATCC PTA-6135 as an animal feed additive.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has announced its evaluation of the application for the renewal of authorization of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei ATCC PTA-6135 as an animal feed additive. The assessment was conducted in response to a request from the European Commission.

After a thorough evaluation, the expert panel concluded that the additive, under the conditions of authorized use, is safe for all animal species, consumers, and the environment. The applicant provided evidence demonstrating that the currently marketed additive complies with the existing terms of authorization.

The EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) further stated that Lacticaseibacillus paracasei ATCC PTA-6135 remains safe for all animal species, including their consumers. However, in terms of user safety, the panel highlighted that due to the nature of the additive, Lacticaseibacillus paracasei ATCC PTA-6135 should be considered a potential skin and respiratory sensitiser. Therefore, caution should be exercised to minimize skin and respiratory exposure to the additive.

The evaluation did not provide conclusive data regarding the potential for eye irritation caused by the additive. Hence, further investigation is required in this regard.

It is important to note that the renewal of the authorization does not require an assessment of the additive's efficacy. The focus of the evaluation was primarily on the safety aspects of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei ATCC PTA-6135 as an animal feed additive.
