US Almond Exports Tainted with Excessive Aflatoxin Levels
In a concerning development, the European Union's Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) has reported that on May 16, 2024, Spain notified the system of US-exported almonds containing excessive levels of aflatoxin.
According to the RASFF notification, the affected almonds were found to have aflatoxin B1 levels at 15.9 ± 20.4 μg/kg and total aflatoxin levels at 17.5 ± 25.9 μg/kg, both exceeding the EU's permissible limits. The products had not yet reached the market and were officially detained.
This incident serves as a stark reminder for export-oriented food companies to strictly adhere to the requirements set by EU member states. Vigilance is crucial when it comes to monitoring the presence of mycotoxins like aflatoxins, which can pose serious health risks. Ensuring product safety and compliance is paramount to mitigating export risks.
The food safety community is closely watching this development, as it highlights the importance of robust quality control measures throughout the supply chain. Proactive steps to identify and address contaminant issues can help maintain consumer trust and market access for US agricultural exports.
This case underscores the need for continued collaboration between regulatory bodies, industry, and researchers to uphold food safety standards in the global trade landscape. By staying abreast of evolving requirements and implementing best practices, US food producers can safeguard their international competitiveness while prioritizing public health.
