Lubrizol Announces Elimination of PFAS from Its Peptide Synthesis Process
Lubrizol, a global leader in advanced specialty ingredients, has reached a major milestone in its sustainability journey: the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), from its peptide synthesis process.
Beginning in June 2025, Lubrizol will launch three commercially available peptides that are completely free of PFAS. This achievement reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to green chemistry and environmental stewardship, building on its portfolio of naturally derived peptides introduced since 2020.
While the use of PFAS in cosmetic ingredients is limited—and they are typically absent from final product formulations—growing global concerns and tightening regulations have driven Lubrizol to proactively eliminate these substances from its synthesis methods.
The three new PFAS-free peptides—Uplevity™ Peptide, Uplevity™ e-Lift Peptide, and Leuphasyl® Peptide—represent a new generation of peptide design. They are produced using solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), a Nobel Prize–winning method that traditionally relies on reagents such as TFA, a PFAS. Although TFA is not added to finished cosmetic formulations and is not currently restricted under some U.S. regulations, evolving legislation in both the U.S. and EU underscores the value of Lubrizol’s forward-looking approach.
