CasymChem's European Expansion: Acquiring Pfizer's CDMO Facility in the UK
In recent years, cost-cutting and efficiency improvement have become the top priorities for multinational pharmaceutical companies (MNCs). Pfizer, for instance, announced in 2023 that it would reduce its operating costs by $3.5 billion, which inevitably involves layoffs. As part of this cost-cutting effort, Pfizer needed to reduce the costs of its Sandwich Site, a small-molecule active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) trial manufacturing facility and some of its development laboratories in the UK. According to public information, Pfizer had to lay off 500 employees from this facility.
Seizing this opportunity, the Chinese pharmaceutical company CasymChem announced on May 21st that it had signed a new agreement with Discovery Park to operate the former Pfizer UK small-molecule API trial facility and some of the development laboratories, establishing its first production base in Europe. This move accelerates CasymChem's global expansion strategy.
CasymChem has been eager to expand its international presence. In 2022, it attempted to acquire the US-based Snapdragon Chemistry to expand its overseas business, but the plan was aborted due to US regulatory reasons. However, Pfizer's cost-cutting initiative has provided CasymChem with a new opportunity.
The Sandwich Site, established in 1954, is one of Pfizer's oldest and most prestigious R&D centers globally. Over the years, the site has maintained world-class capabilities in rapid synthesis route design, high-throughput screening, mature process and analytical development, as well as production and operation management. Sandwich Site has played a crucial role in Pfizer's small-molecule innovative drug development and commercialization process. Therefore, after Pfizer's withdrawal, CasymChem decided to take over the facility.
According to the company's statement, starting from June 2024, CasymChem will fully manage and operate the Sandwich Site's R&D center and production workshops, inheriting the professional technology and management talent team from Pfizer's UK company, achieving a comprehensive, fast, and seamless connection. The Sandwich Site will also become an important part of CasymChem's overseas layout.
CasymChem aims to leverage the Sandwich Site as a critical pivot for its overseas expansion, synergizing with its existing production capacity, and continuously expanding its overseas R&D, pilot production, and commercial production capabilities. Moreover, the company plans to use this facility as a foundation to actively explore emerging fields such as peptides, nucleic acids, and enzyme technologies, further strengthening its R&D capabilities and production base in Europe.
However, CasymChem's overseas expansion ambitions face challenges. The ongoing implementation of the Bioeconomy Security Act adds more variables to the international landscape. Although the act currently provides a "probation period" for the mentioned Chinese companies and their US customers, with the relationship to be severed by 2032, CasymChem is not directly mentioned in the act, but the complex situation still poses uncertainties.
Additionally, a BioSpace survey conducted in March this year showed that 66% of US respondents are unlikely to sign new contracts with Chinese CDMOs. However, the attitude of European customers may differ from that of American companies. Domestic Chinese companies are also increasing their investments in the European market. Whether CasymChem can overcome the headwinds and succeed in its European expansion remains to be seen.
