Insufficient Momentum for Increase, Formic Acid Stabilizes at Current Level

ECHEMI 2026-08-11

August 10th News

The commodity market analysis system shows: Recently, the formic acid market has shown a sideways stabilization trend, with limited overall market fluctuations. As of August 10, the benchmark price for 85% industrial-grade formic acid in China was 1,800 CNY/ton, a decrease of 21.74% compared to the same period last month. The price is stable at a low level, and the overall market situation shows a clear characteristic of supply and demand competition. There is insufficient short-term upward momentum, and the pressure in the medium to long term remains unchanged.

From the perspective of market supply and demand, the current formic acid market is characterized by a mix of bullish and bearish factors, creating a dynamic equilibrium. The key factor supporting the stabilization of low prices is the low inventory levels of manufacturers. Due to the low prices, downstream end-users are more willing to stock up, effectively reducing the manufacturers' spot inventory. The overall inventory level in the industry is low, providing solid support for the spot price and preventing further significant price declines. However, at the same time, the market's positive support is relatively weak. The overall demand from end-users remains weak, with no clear signs of recovery. The lack of sufficient follow-up demand from downstream users results in a generally flat market, which cannot drive a price rebound. This has become the core bearish factor limiting price increases.

From the perspective of subsequent changes in supply, the overall supply pressure in the industry will gradually increase, putting downward pressure on future market conditions. Previously, multiple formic acid production units in China's industry completed their shutdown maintenance. As the maintenance cycle ends, these units are gradually resuming production, leading to a steady increase in the supply of spot goods in the market. Against the backdrop of terminal demand not yet recovering, the release of additional supply will disrupt the current delicate balance between supply and demand, exacerbating the imbalance in the market. This will make it difficult for the formic acid market to rise and will continue to accumulate downward risks.

Overall, in early August, the Chinese formic acid market maintained low prices supported by low inventory levels. However, weak terminal demand and the anticipated increase in supply continue to suppress market conditions. In the short term, the market is likely to maintain a low-level fluctuation pattern, with no significant price volatility expected. In the medium to long term, as maintenance facilities fully resume production, the supply-side pressure will be concentrated, while demand is unlikely to recover quickly. The overall trend of the Chinese formic acid market remains bearish, and there is a possibility of further price declines. Specific attention should still be paid to changes in market supply and demand.
