Global Wheat Market: Weather Concerns in Major Producing Countries Spur Soaring Wheat Prices

ECHEMI 2024-05-27

In the week ending May 24, 2024, global wheat prices saw a significant surge, with Chicago wheat futures reaching a 10-month high. This price spike was driven by several key factors, including concerns over frost damage to wheat production in the Black Sea region, unfavorable weather conditions in major European producing countries, and deteriorating winter wheat crop conditions in the United States.

The CBOT July soft red winter wheat contract settled at $6.9725 per bushel, up 7.06% from the previous week. The KCBT July hard red winter wheat contract rose 9% to $7.2125 per bushel, while the MGEX July hard red spring wheat contract increased 5.80% to $7.5275 per bushel. Euronext's September wheat contract closed at 261.25 euros per ton, up 5.9%. Argentine upriver wheat was priced at $297 per ton, a 2.4% increase.

The frost threat has prompted IKAR to further reduce its estimate for Russia's 2024/25 wheat production. After lowering the forecast from 91 million tons to 86 million tons last week, IKAR has now revised the figure down to 83.5 million tons, citing the impact of the frost on production.

Similar concerns have emerged in Ukraine, where severe frost has been observed in the northern and eastern regions, potentially leading to declines in grain and oilseed output. According to Serhii Avramenko, a leading researcher at the Yuriev Institute of Plant Growing of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, temperatures have dropped as low as -9°C, causing significant damage to winter wheat, barley, rapeseed, and peas.

On the export front, the United States continues to see a slowdown in wheat sales. The USDA's export sales report showed that in the week ending May 16, 2024, net wheat sales amounted to 243,000 tons, lower than the previous week's 380,000 tons. Total sales for the 2023/24 marketing year so far have increased by 0.5% year-over-year, but the USDA's full-year export target of 19.6 million tons represents a 5.1% decline compared to the previous year.

The upward price pressure on global wheat markets is further exacerbated by the strengthening US dollar index, which rose 0.30% compared to the previous week, reaching 104.638 points. This trend has limited the extent of the wheat market's rally, along with the sluggish US wheat export sales.

Overall, the combination of weather concerns in major producing regions and the mixed export dynamics have contributed to the significant price increases observed in the global wheat market, with the potential for further volatility in the coming months.
