EU Approves Thermophilic Myceliophthora Enzyme as Poultry Feed Additive

ECHEMI 2024-06-25

The European Union has approved the use of endo-1,4-β-mannanase produced by the thermophilic fungus Myceliophthora as a feed additive for fattening poultry and ornamental birds. This move undoubtedly brings new development opportunities for the livestock and poultry industry.

According to the latest information published in the Official Journal of the European Union, on June 24, 2024, the European Commission officially issued Regulation (EU) 2024/1743, formally approving the use of endo-1,4-β-mannanase produced by the Myceliophthora strain DSM 33149 as a feed additive for fattening poultry and ornamental birds.

This additive has been classified under the functional group of "digestibility enhancers" within the category of "technological additives," meaning it can promote digestion in animals. The authorization for this additive is valid for ten years until July 14, 2034, providing the industry with sufficient time to verify its efficacy and undertake market promotion.

Endo-1,4-β-mannanase is a highly efficient enzyme preparation that can break down the mannan components in animal feed within the poultry intestine, making them more readily absorbed and utilized by the birds. This additive not only helps improve the growth performance of poultry, such as weight gain and egg production, but also significantly enhances the nutrient absorption capacity of poultry, reducing feed waste and lowering the cost of farming.

The EU's approval demonstrates its support and recognition of innovative feed technologies. As global attention on food safety and animal welfare continues to increase, the sustainable development of the livestock and poultry industry has become a common pursuit. The application of endo-1,4-β-mannanase as a novel feed additive can not only improve the growth efficiency and health of poultry but also contribute to reducing environmental pollution, promoting the green transformation of the livestock and poultry industry.

From the perspective of empirical research, numerous studies have confirmed the positive impact of endo-1,4-β-mannanase on poultry growth. For example, a study published in the journal Animal Nutrition has shown that the addition of endo-1,4-β-mannanase to the feed can significantly improve the body weight and feed conversion ratio of broiler chickens. Meanwhile, this enzyme can also reduce the number of pathogenic bacteria in the chicken gut, enhancing their intestinal health.

The EU's approval of the Myceliophthora-produced endo-1,4-β-mannanase as a poultry feed additive will undoubtedly have a positive impact and provide valuable insights for the relevant industries in China and globally. Firstly, this will drive companies to increase their R&D efforts on new feed additives, promoting technological innovation in the feed industry. Secondly, the application of this additive will help improve the growth efficiency and nutrient absorption capacity of poultry, bringing tangible economic benefits to farmers. Lastly, the promotion and use of this additive will contribute to the green transformation of the livestock and poultry industry, achieving sustainable development.
