JGSOC and DOST-PTRI Collaborate on Spunbond Nonwoven R&D

ECHEMI 2024-07-08

JG Summit Olefins Corporation (JGSOC) signed a memorandum of agreement on the project “Spunbond Nonwoven R&D: Sustainable Meltblown and Spunbond Nonwovens” with the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), an agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), on June 18, 2024.

The Department of Science and Technology-PTRI, the lead government agency responsible for conducting applied research and development for the textile industry, aims to strengthen and diversify its capabilities in nonwoven production through spunbond nonwoven technology using polymer materials.

The signing of this MoU marks a key step in improving cross-sector collaboration, integrating networks, expertise, and resources to enhance local innovation capabilities. DOST-PTRI and JGSOC aim to stimulate the local nonwoven market by seeking value-added opportunities and partnerships.

DOST-PTRI Director IV Julius L. Leaño, Jr said during the event, “This project was born out of the context of addressing material challenges during the pandemic. With the opening of the Philippines’ first lab-scale meltblown line facility, we aim to expand the scope of the spunbond nonwoven ecosystem. This is our first time to conduct research on polymers for textile use, and we are pleased to partner with JG Summit Olefins Corporation on this project.”

JGSOC President and CEO Arnel L. Santos said, “Innovation, research, and development are at the core of JGSOC’s operations. One of our missions is to contribute to the nation-building and industrialization of the Philippines. Therefore, it is encouraging to see collaborations with government agencies such as DOST-PTRI that aim to help our fellow Filipinos address the major challenges they face through science and technology.”

Spunbond nonwovens are used in a variety of applications such as filtration, packaging, agrotextiles, and geotextiles.
