The Turbulent Times of Sirnaomics: Resignations, Cash Flow Concerns, and Operational Challenges
On June 3rd, the Hong Kong stock market was closely watching as Sirnaomics, a prominent biotech company, issued an important announcement disclosing the resignations of its Chief Medical Officer, Francois Lebel, and its Chief Financial Officer, Ye Yongji. Prior to this, the Chief Strategy Officer, Dai Xiaochang, had also resigned from his position due to personal reasons, though he will continue to serve as an executive director and has accepted the invitation to become a senior advisor for the group's drug development and commercialization.
Sirnaomics, the "leader in China's nucleic acid drug industry" that dazzled the Hong Kong Stock Exchange with its listing in December 2021, has recently found itself embroiled in a wave of high-level management changes. Since the beginning of 2024, several senior executives have been selling off their shares, and the company has even had two major shareholders subjected to forced liquidation. This series of events has raised widespread doubts about the future of this once-promising pharmaceutical company, with many speculating that the company's cash flow is now strained, making it difficult to maintain normal operations.
According to Sirnaomics' 2023 annual report, the company's core products are two innovative small-molecule RNA interference therapies. However, despite the massive market potential of these products, the company has yet to generate any product revenue. Instead, the company's research and development expenses reached a staggering $54.38 million in 2023, a significant figure within the industry. As of the end of 2023, the company's cash and cash equivalents balance stood at only $23.88 million, less than a quarter of the figure from the same period in 2022, indicating the company's precarious financial situation.
In the annual report, Sirnaomics candidly acknowledged that to ensure sufficient cash reserves to support future R&D and market expansion, the group has prioritized the allocation of resources to projects with the greatest potential, while suspending or slowing the development of other projects. This decision, although able to alleviate the company's financial pressure in the short term, casts a shadow over its long-term development.
The CEO of Sirnaomics revealed in a media interview that to address the current financial difficulties, several middle-to-high-level managers have voluntarily agreed to take pay cuts ranging from 10% to 50%, which have been implemented since February 15th of this year. This action demonstrates the company's senior management's commitment and sense of responsibility, but also reflects the severe challenges the company is currently facing.
Furthermore, Sirnaomics has also implemented significant layoffs. Public information shows that the company's employee count has decreased from 225 at the end of 2022 to 145 at the end of 2023, and by early April of this year, the number of employees has further declined to around 70. While these layoffs can help reduce the company's operating costs, they may also have a certain impact on the company's talent reserves and innovative capabilities.
