Suspected Food Poisoning Outbreak Affects Over 1,000 Students and Staff at Schools in Namwon, South Korea

On July 6, 2024, South Korean media revealed that several schools in Namwon City, North Jeolla Province, have been embroiled in a suspected food poisoning incident, with over 1,000 students and staff members affected.

According to the official report from the Namwon City government as of 1 PM on the 6th, a total of 1,024 people from elementary, middle, and high schools in the area have exhibited symptoms of suspected food poisoning. At 24 schools, students and staff members have been displaying typical food poisoning symptoms such as vomiting, fever, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

The Namwon City authorities' preliminary investigation has indicated that the affected individuals consumed kimchi that was centrally distributed to the schools. While most of the patients' symptoms are not severe and do not require hospitalization, a small number of cases are more serious. Testing by professional agencies has detected the presence of norovirus in samples from the patients, the environment, and the kimchi regularly delivered to the schools.

To contain the further escalation of the situation, the Namwon City government has quickly taken action, suspending the production, distribution, and sale of all products from the company involved. They plan to launch a more in-depth epidemiological investigation. The city government has also pledged to take all necessary measures to prevent the further spread of the food poisoning incident. The company at the center of the issue has also demonstrated a high degree of social responsibility by proactively recalling the relevant products that have already entered the market.
