Celanese to Close Acetate Tow Plant in Lanaken, Belgium by 2026
Celanese Corporation, a global leader in chemicals and specialty materials, has announced plans to cease operations at its acetate tow manufacturing facility in Lanaken, Belgium, by the second half of 2026. The company has informed its employees and local labor representatives and will now begin formal information and consultation procedures.
The acetate tow business has been facing persistent challenges, including declining market demand and an increasingly complex regulatory environment. The planned closure also reflects Celanese’s need to optimize its cost structure, particularly given the high energy and operating costs associated with the Lanaken site.
Following a thorough strategic review, the company determined that continued operation of the Lanaken facility is no longer economically sustainable. Approximately 160 employees involved in production and support functions may be affected by the proposed closure.
Celanese emphasized its commitment to maintaining uninterrupted product supply and customer service during the transition period. The company will work closely with customers to meet contractual obligations and ensure a smooth adjustment to any future changes.
In addition, Celanese intends to collaborate closely with local authorities, community stakeholders, and employee representatives to support an orderly and responsible transition process.
