Dietary Compass: Korea's Refined Revisions for Healthier Horizons

On July 10th, 2024, the Korean government officially issued Announcement 2024-35, enacting meticulous revisions to certain provisions within the Food Codex. The key highlights of these amendments include, but are not limited to, the following three areas:

Firstly, in order to better meet the nutritional needs of lung disease patients, Korea has established brand-new standards for specialized nutritional formula foods. This aims to provide lung patients with more scientific and reasonable dietary options, thereby promoting their health recovery.

Secondly, the usage standards for garcinia as a common food ingredient have been carefully adjusted. The previous regulations stipulated that its usage proportion must not exceed 5%, and the daily intake must not surpass 6 grams. After in-depth research and evaluation, the new standards have lowered the usage proportion to under 2%, while strictly limiting the intake to within 2.5 grams, ensuring food safety for consumers.

Lastly, the residue limits for four pesticides, including fluazifop-P-butyl, have also been necessarily adjusted. This measure further safeguards food quality and safety, mitigating the potential health impacts of pesticide residues.

These revisions to the Food Codex not only reflect the Korean government's emphasis on food safety and nutritional health, but also provide the general public with even safer and healthier food choices.
