Spiber's Pioneering Sustainable Textile Ventures
Spiber, a leading innovator in synthetic biology, has recently announced a supply chain partnership with three renowned Italian textile giants - Marzotto, RDGruppoFlorence, and FilaturaPapiFabio. This collaboration marks a significant breakthrough in the development of sustainable luxury materials, as Spiber's BrewedProtein™ protein fiber will be utilized in a range of innovative projects.
Since its founding in 2007, Spiber has dedicated itself to researching and developing spider silk proteins. The core of its technology lies in the customized microbial production of high-quality protein fibers. Through genetic engineering, Spiber has successfully encoded optimized spider silk proteins and achieved large-scale replication in specially engineered bacteria. In 2022, Spiber's fermentation-based production facility began operations, with an annual capacity of 200 to 300 tons, making it the world's first ISO-compliant industrial-scale protein fiber production site.
In addition to the collaboration with Italian luxury brands, Spiber has also partnered with apparel brands such as Pangaia and The North Face, as well as companies in diverse sectors, including Japan's Shiseido and Toyota. In April 2024, Spiber completed a staggering $680 million funding round, elevating its market valuation to $1.22 billion, making it one of Japan's most valuable startups.
Spiber's innovative spider silk protein fibers strike a balance between strength and flexibility, while having a relatively low environmental impact, offering a new sustainable choice for the global textile market. The global spider silk protein market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 18.29%, reaching a market size of $9.49 billion by 2031.
